Amy’s Bread
When looking for new place to a do a food review on, how do you decide where to go? It might be from a recommendation given by a friend, maybe a newspaper article, or simply just walking by. Another way that helps me to choose is by lines. Some places have lines out the door from open to close. A constant swinging door of business because the product is supposedly spectacular. I have to admit that there are times when this method has failed me in the past. I remember an immensely popular deli in the lower east side that was just awful. On the other hand, some places work out very well. Amy’s Bread did.
Amy’s Bread is a quaint place that has been around for 17 years now and has exploded onto the baking scene with some serious force. Since their inception they’ve grown to three shops and even has a nationally released book entitled “The Sweeter Side Of Amy’s Bread“. I visited their original location which is nestled just off of midtown west bordering on Hell’s Kitchen. What I found cool about this location is how the place is divided into two parts. One is the retail/eating area. The other part is the kitchen itself which has a big open window the the street outside. Anyone can walk by at anytime and see the magic of Amy’s Bread.
And onto the eats. To get an idea of what they have to offer, we grabbed array of various items. One of my favorites was the Cinnamon Challah Bread.
It had more of a touch of cinnamon rather than an over powering flavor. The bread was very soft and chewy. There was a little bit of stickiness as expected because who doesn’t like to lick cinnamon off their hands?
I tried a slice of the good ol’ Black & White Cake.
Now here’s where I begin to understand the hype. A good piece of cake should be insanely moist, chocolatey, and have a frosting that is soft, creamy, and really sweet. Basically I just described this cake. It’s pretty intense. Just to make sure all the cakes are the bomb, we tried a slice of the Yellow with Pink Icing with exactly the same results.
They know what they are doing.
You know I’m kicking myself as I write this. I just realized that we tried all sorts of sweets at Amy’s Bread, but never actually tried their fresh baked bread. The stuff that put them on the map! And they make so much of it too. All different sorts of bread like organic, whole wheat, black olive, rosemary, sourdough, semolina, and tons more. So my apologies about that. Maybe you’ll have to find out for me.

A baking paradise! Great delicious pics
Oh wow. I want some now!
True enough about the cake.
Good cake… good coffee… more than likely a good place!
I Just got hired at Amy’s Bread in Hell’s Kitchen and couldn’t be more excited. The smell, the freshness of their products, their bread, oh! their bread. They gave me a semolina with golden raisins & fennel loaf after we finished my first interview, just so I could take home and try. It was delicious. Nice texture, golden brown crust, buttery taste, yet sweet and herbaceous. Can’t wait to start working, taste everything and become an expert.
