  • 23 drops red food coloring
  • 1 cup crushed candy canes (for topping)

Instructions

  2. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla, and peppermint extracts.
  3. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
  4. Divide dough; leave one half plain and color the other with red food coloring.
  5. Roll small pieces from each dough half into ropes; twist together to form candy cane shapes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place cookies on parchment-lined baking sheet, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for 9-11 minutes.
  7. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Top with crushed candy canes before serving.
